Project overview

This project involved the design of the landscape surrounding the Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium on the University of Arizona. Through their partnership with the Tucson Unified School District, the Flandrau has become a popular elementary school field trip destination. It was imperative to create a landscape that catered to the university campus and the children that visit the Flandrau each week

Apollo Moon Garden

Through this innovative re-imagining of the outdoor space, the Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium will become one of the most celebrated sites of imagination and discovery on the University of Arizona Campus. Before even entering the space, onlookers will experience a sense of wonder and will be drawn engage with all the Flandrau has to offer.

Goal 1

Make Flandrau Science Center outdoor space more inviting and illicit a feeling of being separate from surrounding area and a feeling of excitement for their experience.

Goal 2

Highlight outdoor specimens and create opportunities for visitor interactions

Goal 3

Provide a safe, creative, play area for children and visitors explore and engage with science and creativity before they even enter the doors.

Goal 4

Showcase desert plants and foliage and highlight Tucson’s long-standing history of celebtrating the stars and nightsky through the creative of moon gardens and developing nighttime programming.

Results

This project once again challenged me to use programs I had ever previously used and to expand my knowledge base. I am very proud of how it turned out.
